Wheels2Work

Our Wheels2Work scheme was a moped leasing scheme aimed at helping people overcome the initial problem of getting to work or training where no suitable alternative transport existed within Dumfries and Galloway. Our scheme was a whole new way of helping people make the most of opportunities in work, training or education.

We had 125cc scooters that were available to hire up to 12 months at a time. The scheme paid for the person’s motorcycle training (CBT), their helmet, jacket and gloves and provided the insurance and all servicing costs. All the person had to pay for was their initial provisional license, petrol for the bike and a nominal weekly hire charge. During the hire period, the person had contact with a Project Coordinator, who offered help and advice in securing a long term transport solution.

Besides assisting individuals who were ‘Not in Employment, Education or Training’ (NEET), this scheme helped training providers, Learning and Skills Council, Jobcentre Plus and employers by removing barriers to work or training and increasing the labour pool in the region. The local economy benefited too, by reducing the need for people to move away from the region to areas with better transport facilities.
